Dear Leaders,
The longer we avoid a conversation, the more power it gains.
Every leader has one.
That conversation you keep pushing down the calendar. The one you tell yourself “isn’t urgent” or “needs the right moment.”
You know the one.
And the longer you avoid it, the bigger it gets.
It starts to shape how you feel about the person. It changes how you speak to them: more cautiously, less directly.
It shifts how others behave too, because they notice something is off. You’ve just handed power to the thing you’re avoiding.
Avoiding hard conversations doesn’t preserve peace; it delays clarity. And in the delay, everything erodes:
Trust
Respect
Performance
Culture
The team knows. They always know.
They sense when accountability isn’t upheld. They see the exceptions. And they quietly adjust their own standards to match.
You know from experience that hard conversations don’t get easier. They get harder.
Every day we avoid one, we’re not leading; we’re hiding.
What to do? You already know the answer:
Stop waiting for the “right moment”; create it. Sit down with that person, look them in the eye, and tell the truth. With respect and clarity.
That’s courage and leadership.
Like the saying goes, “You don’t have to like it; you just have to do it.”
And feel the weight of the world lift off your shoulders.
The hard part’s over.
Onward,
Hamza
